Before you book a locksmith
A few useful details make the first conversation clearer, whether you are locked out or planning a lock change.
Have these details ready
- Your full postcode and whether there are access or parking arrangements to discuss.
- Whether the door is open, closed, locked or unable to secure.
- The door material, any visible lock brand and what happens when you turn the key or lift the handle.
- Whether a key is lost, broken, inside the property or no longer working.
- Whether you own the property or have authority to arrange the work.
Ask what the quote covers
Ask about labour, replacement parts, any call-out or attendance charges and tax treatment. Explain any out-of-hours requirements. Confirm what is included, and whether the quote could change after inspection.
If a different repair or replacement is proposed on arrival, ask for the reason and updated price before agreeing to it.
Access and permission
Be prepared to discuss proof of identity and permission to access or alter the property. If you rent, check any landlord or managing-agent requirements before arranging a lock replacement.
A lock that is getting harder to use
Describe the change rather than trying to diagnose the part yourself. A door that catches, a handle that will not lift and a key that will not turn are different useful observations. Avoid forcing a stiff key or mechanism.
For planned work
Explain who needs access, whether existing keys need to continue working and whether any insurance or building requirements apply. Share requirements from the relevant documents rather than relying on a general description such as "insurance approved".
Sending an enquiry does not reserve an appointment. Ask for the agreed arrangements directly.
